On the occasion of Gersht’s major survey exhibition “History Repeating” at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (August 25, 2012–January 6, 2013), Gersht and exhibition curator Al Miner discussed Gersht’s evolving practice and the diverse threads of history woven throughout his work, which uses technology to explore the ways multiple histories are communicated, including histories that shaped the artist's own identity and defined the state of contemporary society. With sources ranging from nineteenth-century still life paintings to the Holocaust, Gersht’s images reveal the links between history and memory, creation and destruction, and beauty and violence while exploring the passage of time.
