Brooklyn-based artist Shay Arick presented recent installations, sculptures, and video works that expose societal constructs and politics in Israel/Palestine. Arick presented two projects that are part of his ongoing investigation into male archetypes and toxic-masculinity: the two-part video David and Goliath (2017) imagines the perspectives of both David and Goliath, and Cowboys (2018–19), a series of sculptures and videos that deconstruct America’s fascination with the cowboy as an ideal masculine figure. Arick employs humor to critique male archetypes in an effort to reimagine them.
Presented as part of Artis’ emerging artists talks series.
