Los Angeles–based video and installation artist Shasha Dothan presented recent work examining the ways in which identities shift in response to cultural settings. Her talk focused on a work in progress, The Wandering Israeli, an immersive installation and experimental documentary about her experience as an immigrant living between countries and languages. Composed of layers of sound and image, the video takes place in Israel, the US, and Germany, alternating between Hebrew, English, and German. Found footage of newsreels and propaganda clips are interwoven with conversations between Dothan and her family about immigration and the significance of being an Israeli living outside of Israel.
Presented as part of Artis’ emerging artists talks series.
