Rethinking Broken Lines was a large-scale video installation based on comprehensive research of the work and biography of Israeli choreographer Heda Oren. Oren (1935–2008) was one of the leading figures in the fringe dance scene in Israel. She studied dance in Paris at L’École Supérieure d’Études Chorégraphiques and with avant-garde choreographer Alwin Nikolais in New York. The peak of her choreographic career was during the 1970s and ’80s, when she created dance works in collaboration with contemporary avant-garde dancers and musicians. Looking at Oren’s work, Ben Ari expanded her exploration of the presence of the female body and its relation to the space surrounding it, as well as notions of durability, endurance, deficiency, balance, and potency. Rethinking Broken Lines was presented at the Herzliya Museum of Contemporary Art in 2017.
