During her residency at The Fountainhead, Shanan worked on new paintings that explore ideas of borders, limits, territory, and colonization. Based on photographic documentation of actions and installations Shanan initiates with woven rugs, placed in different locations. She describes these as “a symbolic role switch, as the rug carries the restrictions which were once applied on the female body itself.” Thus moving the rug outdoors, its role shifts, clearing room for the presence of the female body. The tug becomes “an object of identity,” which is the subject of the paintings that result.
