In this large-scale inkjet photomontage, Ilit Azouly intervenes in historical records, reimagining cultural history through a feminist lens. Drawing on analog photographs from the archive of art historian David Storm Rice, Azoulay digitally isolates and reconfigures motifs from medieval Islamic metalwork—objects whose iconography traditionally centers male figures. Through a meticulous process of digital collage, splicing and reconstruction, she assembles hybrid, almost fantastical, forms that challenge and expand conventional narratives.
This panel exemplifies Azoulay’s transformation of male-centric imagery into a speculative visual language of matriarchy. By re-gendering existing images and creating new composites, she invites viewers to consider alternative narratives—ones in which women are not only present but play a central role. The result is both a revision of the past and a visionary proposition for the future.
