Curated by Maayan Sheleff, “Promised Land” was a video program of works by artists from Israel relating to the festival’s theme, “public diary.” The artists included all use the medium of video or moving image in various ways to construct a subjective view of a complex political reality. Some create poetic takes on the documentary genre that question the possibility of a common historical narrative. Others perform symbolic actions that address the border between private history and collective memory. Still others paste together archival materials, or stage and reconstruct memories of the past, in a manner that projects on both present and future. Sheleff was invited by the festival’s director and chief curator to curate the program and give a lecture at the festival accompanied by two of the artists, Dor Guez and Nir Evron.
