These five works belong to an ongoing series that Joshua Neustein began in 1970, using vintage carbon copy paper to explore a range of effects, including cutting, layering, erasing, folding, pulling back, tearing, and scratching. The carbon paper series harkens back to Neustein's childhood memories of being in hiding with his family during World War II. Although Neustein refers to the works as “drawings,” they typically involve no additional media. Exceptions include A Chair in Place of a Foot (2012), in which pink paper has been added beneath one layer, and Inverse Moisture II (2006), where graphite has been applied over the carbon paper. This set of five works, dating from 1975 to 2012, demonstrates the range of techniques and material manipulations Neustein has developed within the series.

The five carbon paper works were acquired by the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), 2026.
