The performative exhibition “Blade Memory” is a literal interpretation of a traveling exhibition, in that the three featured artists will travel to Dortmund, Germany with the small to medium sized artworks that they will present in their suitcase. This performative act reimagines how artworks travel internationally to be included in exhibitions, shifting the focus from the movement of the artwork via fine art shipping—which is how artworks are often transported—to the movement of the artist. The project is an ode to Marcel Duchamp's Boîte-en-valise (1935-41), a series of portable miniature monographs, which are often packaged in a suitcase. Organized by Rebekka Seubert, Artistic Director at Dortmunder Kunstverein, “Blade Memory” is the continuation of a project presented at the Center for Contemporary Art Tel Aviv in 2020, and composed of assemblages, paintings, and sculptures, as well as a series of actions and public interventions.
