Artist Bio
Asaf Elkalai lives and works in Tel Aviv. He embraces a variety of media, including installation, sculpture, printmaking, video, and photography, which remains a core medium throughout his practice. Asaf often explores durational and dimensional concepts—negative and positive spaces, overlapping perspectives, horizontal and vertical trajectories—and the perceptions individuals share in understanding the world. Intangible elements (light, shadow, volume, air, movement, distance) are also present in his works through combinations of classic photographic methods and contemporary technologies; locating the “blind spots” between the diverse media he incorporates. Some of Asaf’s works invoke the mystical, ceremonial, or, at times, an underlying sense of morbidity constructed via his explorations of internal ritual and private mythologies. His work has been the subject of exhibitions at the Israel Museum, Jerusalem (2021), Bar-David Museum of Art and Judaica, Kibbutz Baram (2021), CCA Tel Aviv-Yafo (2020), Tel Aviv Museum of Art (2019), and galleries in Israel and around the world. It is also included in a host of public and private collections. Asaf has participated in international residency programs at Skowhegan, Maine; Artport, Tel Aviv; EAU & GAZ , Italy; and others. He received his MFA with honors, a BA from Bezalel Academy of Art and Design, and a diploma in Art Education from The Hebrew University. Today, he teaches at The School of Visual Theater, and is employed at Bezalel. www.asafelkalai.com
