TOTAL-VARIATION-NOISE is an edition of 100 unique tote bags that offer a reflection on our noisy and arbitrary world. The visuals present a series of randomized outputs from a Max/MSP visual noise generator (patch: Rachid Moro). Following a set of rules defined by the artist, the pixel size and jittering patterns are ever-changing, and outputs are released every few seconds. The work takes its cue and measures from the static that is commonly seen in VHS cassettes and analog TVs. This static is also called “visual snow,” which refers to a visual field that appears in hallucinations while in a state of dazzle, often experienced with closed eyes.

Artist Bio

A visual artist, scenographer, and urban practitioner based in Berlin, Alona Rodeh’s cross-disciplinary artistic practice is rooted in perceptions of space, and explorations of the cityscape as a nocturnal entity. Her works include immersive installations, urban night walks, research-based publishing, moving image work, and more. Alona has exhibited widely internationally at institutions, museums, and galleries. As an extension of her artistic practice, she is an advocate for Dark Sky International—an NGO raising awareness of sky glow and other forms of light pollution. Alona recently participated in Frankfurt, Germany’s B3 Moving Image Festival with “Runway Freefall,” and “Wasted” (her first-ever video game), where she won the Best Immersive and Time-Based Art category. Her new public work, “Nightcaps”—featuring a series of old street lamps with Alona’s new sculptures on top to address light pollution—will soon join her recently opened public commission “The Tale of the Scale and the Skull" in Berlin.
