Nir Hod’s Mother depicts a young woman in an eerie scene, her arms raised, her body floating against a dark background. The work’s protagonist is based on one of the figures in the well-known photograph taken during the 1943 Warsaw Ghetto uprising, showing at its forefront a little boy holding his hands over his head while an SS soldier points a machine gun at him. “She’s in the front, but she’s in the shadows—nobody notices her,” says Hod. “For me, focusing on her is a correction. It becomes something completely new about the history.”
