The 15th edition of Le Mois de la Photo à Montréal, What Does the Image Stand For?, probed the concept of photographic evidence and featured work that questions the status of the photograph as a recording of the real, while examining fantastical and sublimated realities. The Biennale included works by Matan Mittwoch and Moshe Ninio. For both artists, this was the first time they exhibited their work in Canada, and for Mittwoch it was his first show in North America. Ninio’s work, which questions the social and political efficacy of the image, was presented in a group exhibition alongside pieces by Abdel Abdessemed, Taryn Simon, and Latoya Ruby-Frazier. Mittwoch presented a solo exhibition including large format abstract prints that explore the aesthetic/material qualities of the post-photographic image.
