In his first solo museum exhibition in Italy, Dor Guez will present a new work, commissioned by the Museo MAN, about the artist’s grandmother, Samira. The new work is based on a recording Guez took of the sound of tractors destroying his grandmother’s house, 65 years after the house was declared a property of “Present Absentees.” This term relates to Palestinians who fled or were expelled from their home in British Mandate Palestine before and during the 1948 war, yet remained within the area that became the state of Israel. As in previous works by Guez, this new sound installation describes the widespread effect of the 1948 war on the culture, art, and properties of the Palestinian community.

The exhibition will also include photos, documents and videos that are part of Guez’s ongoing project the Christian Palestinian Archive (CPA), a growing collection of scans of archival documents from the first half of the 20th century that conserve the personal histories of the Christian Palestinian community worldwide.
