Hilla Ben Ari: Rethinking Broken Lines
Herzliya Museum of Contemporary Art
Herzliya, Israel
January 14–April 22, 2017

Rethinking Broken Lines was a large scale video installation based on comprehensive research of the work and biography of Israeli choreographer Heda Oren and was presented at the Herzliya Museum of Contemporary Art.

Heda Oren (1935-2008) was an Israeli choreographer, and one of the leading figures in the fringe dance scene in Israel. She studied dance in Paris at L’École Supérieure d’Études Chorégraphiques and with avant-garde choreographer Alwin Nikolais in New York. The peak of her choreographic career was during the 1970’s and 80’s when she created dance works in collaboration with contemporary avant-garde dancers and musicians. Through dialogue with Heda Oren’s work, Ben Ari expanded her exploration of the presence of the feminine body and its relation to the space surrounding it, as well as notions of durability, endurance, deficiency, balance and potency.
